I was born in Meekatharra and spent most of my childhood on Barwidgee and Wonganoo Stations. During my school years, I attended Wiluna Mission before returning home to Barwidgee or Wonganoo Station for the school holidays, where my parents were living. The station managers use to pick us from school and take us to school. Living out on country with families and living a traditional life where our families taught us about our culture and traditions.
What I was taught I now as an Elder, pass onto my grandchildren and other families that want to learn. I have two older sons and two younger adopted sons. Now, I live in Kalgoorlie and dedicate much of my time supporting Kultju. I’m proud to be a Kultju Native Title traditional owner for my father’s country.
I became a director to show and inspire the next generation that anyone can achieve this role. All it takes is understanding, clear direction, commitment, guidance, and a willingness to be teachable—no matter your age. If I can do it, then others can too.
I am truly honoured to have been appointed as a director, where I can support our members, especially the younger generation, and families by sharing our knowledge. I am incredibly proud of the progress our Directors of Kultju have made and the growth of Kultju as an organization. Building up the Kultju office and corporation has been a collective effort, and it’s fulfilling to see how it continues to benefit all our members.
Most people know who I am, but if you don’t—I’m Merita, the granddaughter of Keith Sceghi. I became a director of the Kultju Corporation to grow into a stronger leader and to be a voice for all members of this Corporation. This role is a personal journey for me; to learn how to speak up, represent our collective interests, and contribute meaningfully to our future.
I’ve worked across a variety of job roles, which has given me a broad base of knowledge and practical experience. I bring a strong work ethic, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. I’m committed to understanding the business side of our operations more deeply and to gaining experience in working with agencies and companies that align with our goals.
One of my key aspirations is to establish a Young Leaders Group within our membership. I believe it’s vital that we start nurturing the next generation—helping them find their voices, build confidence, and step into leadership roles. Our future depends on empowering our young people to become the leaders we need for tomorrow.

I was born and raised in Leonora, as children, our parents made sure we spent many weekends and holidays back on country in the northern Goldfields. Growing up alongside our elders, I had the privilege of being taught and shown our culture and traditional ways. Now, I live in Kalgoorlie with my husband and youngest daughter, and I cherish this stage of life as a grandparent. I am proud to give back by passing on my knowledge to my grandchildren.
To share this knowledge more broadly, I started my own small business to deliver Cultural Awareness training to companies, helping them better understand traditional owners and foster positive working relationships between employees and employers. This has been a rewarding experience for me, and the feedback from participants has been incredibly positive.
I decided to step up and serve as a director this term to support the Kultju directors and help build an office that will serve our members—a place where Kultju members can be supported socially, economically, and culturally, empowering their lives through their native title. The Kultju Board of Directors is united, and this unity allows us to ensure that the office and the decisions we make are always focused on benefiting our members.
I have learned that I am in a position where I can make a difference for our families and members, building relationships based on trust, understanding, transparency, and respect. Encouraging others to step up and give it a try and you just may Suprise yourself at what you really are capable of.I’ve learned the importance of listening to others and making decisions that are in the best interest of all, not just individuals or specific groups. Being united as a large family and making decisions for the collective is what makes me proud of all we’ve achieved this year.
I have a varied professional background that spans across public sector roles, FIFO work, and significant experience within the Native Title space. My career began with roles at Kalgoorlie Regional Prison and the Kalgoorlie Court House, where I gained valuable insights into the legal and corrections systems.I also spent some time working FIFO, which gave me a broad understanding of remote and regional operations.
Transitioning into the Native Title sector was a pivotal moment in my career. Before joining Kultju, I spent four years working as an Agreement Implementation and Charitable Trust Manager with another Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC). In this role, I was involved in bridging the gap between traditional owners and the broader community, ensuring that agreements were implemented effectively and that charitable trusts benefited those in need. These experiences have all contributed to my deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within these sectors, which I bring with me to my current work with Kultju.
Currently, I’m fortunate to serve as the General Manager for Kultju Aboriginal Corporation, a role that is both professionally rewarding and personally meaningful as I’m also a traditional owner. Being in this position allows me to not only contribute to the management and growth of the organization but also to connect deeply with the community and cultural responsibilities that come with it. In my role, I oversee the day-to-day operations of the corporation, ensuring that we meet our strategic goals and effectively serve the interests of our people. It’s a privilege to be part of a team that works to empower and create positive outcomes for our traditional owners and broader community.
My primary goal in supporting Kultju Aboriginal Corporation and its members is to ensure that our traditional owners have a strong and sustainable future. I am committed to fostering an environment where cultural heritage, community empowerment, and economic growth can thrive together. This involves supporting the effective implementation of agreements and managing resources responsibly so that they benefit our people in both the short and long term. I aim to strengthen our organizational capacity to create meaningful opportunities, whether through education, employment, or community development. Additionally, I am focused on enhancing communication and collaboration within our community to ensure that all voices are heard, and decisions are made in the best interest of our members. At the heart of my work is the desire to preserve and celebrate our culture while ensuring that our community is positioned for a successful and prosperous future.

Being Samoan in this field of work it has allowed me to strengthen my connection to my land back home in the islands, my ancestors, and heritage. My professional journey began in banking, where I developed a strong foundation in financial literacy and discovered a passion for numbers and accounting. I went on to support my father-in-law’s mining services business, managing bookkeeping and day-to-day administration.
I then spent over three years at a large drilling company, progressing into a management role. This position saw me oversee head office operations, coordinate field logistics, manage staff, and produce detailed budget reports and monthly account reconciliations along with many other things.
Currently, I volunteer as a bookkeeper for M25—a not-for-profit organisation supporting community members in Kalgoorlie experiencing hardship. This work is incredibly meaningful to me and closely aligns with my values. I balance this role alongside my ongoing work with Kultju AC.
