Description: This artwork shares a Tjupan story of Gnarmunga; the honey ant, an important bush food found deep in the sandy earth of our Country. The large honey ant in the centre represents both the physical animal and the knowledge carried by the Old People who taught us where to find it, how to dig, and how to care for the land it lives in.

The white handprints symbolise our young ones learning on Country;  leaving their mark as they are taught by their Elders. Each handprint reflects the passing down of knowledge, from generation to generation.

The circular patterns show meeting places where families gather, share food, and pass on stories of Gnarmunga and other bush tucker. The U-shapes represent people sitting together on the ground, learning and working as one.

Different dot-work sections show the changing landforms of Tjupan Country; the sandhills, claypans, creeklines and the soft ground where honey ants live beneath the roots of mulga tree’s. The colours reflect the earth after rain, the warmth of the afternoon sun, and the richness of the soil that holds our foods and medicines.

This painting honours the relationship between Tjupan people and Gnarmunga; a reminder that our survival, our knowledge, and our stories come from the land beneath our feet.
